The Renovation of Kermaria

Kermaria was a former ‘pension de famille”. Situated on the banks of the river Aven and between two former working mills, in the mill town of Pont Aven it housed the mill workers in one of its many rooms. Apparently the house dates from sometime between 1850 and 1890, built in two parts with one half older than the other. Gauguin made a painting of the next door mill “Le Moulin David’ in 1888. A bucolique scene of the river and trees and before the viaduct which bought the steam train to Pont Aven was built. other than that the view remains much the same.

Post war, Kermaria was the family house for the owners of the Penanroz flour mill for over 50 years. When I bought the house it hadn’t been lived in for about 15 years. Set in a beautiful and enviable position on the river, the property stood solid and proud and had stacks of charm, but internally there was so much to do. It was easy to see the electrics and plumbing needed to be completely redone, the windows changed and maybe some walls moved around. I am not sure at that point I envisaged the scale of what was to come, but I wanted to take the house into the 21st century and something that would be future proofed and energy efficient.

I now know I was crazy. It was an act of passion, but made a house with LOVE

Here is just a taste of the process….. believe me there was so much more!

I cannot thank enough the artisans who worked on the project. Excellence is an understatement, and the project could not have gone any smoother nor as well done without them.
