Some of Our Favourite Art Galleries in Pont Aven

There are over 60 art galleries in Pont Aven. Considering a local population of just under 3,000 people this is quite considerable. The most important and well known is the Musee de Pont Aven, which is linked to to the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, and definitely merits a visit. The museum was recently renovated, and its’ medium size makes for a very agreeable visit. Throughout the year there are varying exhibitions, as well as the permanent collection which represents the School of Pont Aven, and its impressionist artists.

There is a long history of artists in Pont Aven. Many were inspired by the marine light, the picturesque sights of the Bois D’Amour, the Tremalo chapel and the pretty port, as well, it may be said, the lively bars and welcoming atmosphere. The most renowned artists being Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard and the Pont Aven School. This has given a heritage that many seem keen to cling to. The town still attracts artists from all over the world.

It is hard to ignore the art galleries on a visit to Pont Aven. Some may make you want to shut your eyes, and are not to everyone’s taste, but there is something for everyone, and there are some gems.
